Grenada Lake - Grenada MS 7/20/13

We all loaded up and headed to Grenada on Saturday morning.  We set up camp first on the west side of the dam at Hugh White State Park campground.  This campground was very convenient, clean and quiet and we were right on the canal (aka Yalubusha River).    Once we had our camp set up we headed out to explore the lake.   We went by the visitors center to ask where was the best place to go.  This lake is the largest in the state of MS encompassing 35,000 acres and 148 miles of shoreline.  The worker there was of no help other than saying go to the North side and watch out for gators!  Off to the North side we went!  We went to the North abutment boat ramp and put in there.  We followed the shoreline to the North and the entire time stayed in one little "finger" of the lake.  There were several areas of beautiful cypress trees and we also encountered a large nest - believed to be from an Osprey.

Six of us  paddled an 8 mile section of the Wolf River today aka Ghost River section.  The weather was perfect and we saw a bald eagle, several snakes, skink, bull frog, giant beaver and the biggest spider I have ever seen other than a tarantula!   The water was really high and it made the river much easier to paddle since we were floating over obstacles instead of around them.

Tippah River Potts Camp MS 5/19/13

We tried a new spot on Sunday.  We (7 of us) paddled a 9 mile section of the Tippah River starting at the 178 bridge in Potts Camp MS and we ended at the Bethlehem Rd bridge in Bethlehem MS.  The section of river we were on was channelized and there weren't any obstacles other than sand bars in some low water spots.  We were told that just past the Bethlehem bridge, it's not channelized and you can float all the way to the Hwy 7 bridge.  We may try that at some point!

Wall Doxey State Park Holly Springs MS Nov 2012

Spent one night at Wall Doxey State Park Thanksgiving weekend.  Got on the water Sat morning and it was a very chilly 28 degrees!  Paddled around for a few hours but I didn't explore the whole lake.  Beautiful park and only 35 or 40 min from Memphis, I will be back there soon!

Wolf River - Ghost River section August 26th 2012

We paddled the 8 mile section between La Grange and Moscow yesterday.  This section is called the Ghost Rover section.  The Ghost River gets its name because there is a portion of the Ghost section (about 2 miles ) that has no visible current.  The river opens up into a huge cypress and tupelo tree swamp filled with huge lilly pads and other water plants.   The area is well marked and we didn't have any issues finding our way through.   There were 6 others plus the 4 of us that rode on our shuttle up river.  We let them launch first and we only ran into a couple of them for the remainder of the trip.  When we were leaving the lunch spot, another group of 10 or so was pulling into the lunch spot.  Check out the Wolf River Conservancy website (wolfriver.org) and you can get detailed info on this section of the river.

Wolf River - Bateman to Moscow

Wolf River - Bateman bridge to Moscow  6.1 miles

Absolutely gorgeous section of the river. Lots of twists and turns , cypress and tupelo trees with breathtaking views.   This section took us about 4.5 hours and we stopped twice to rest.  We had about a 50 yard portage due to shallow water and we encountered shallow water again towards the end but managed to make it through without getting out.  Sand bottoms and clear water throughout the entire way.   I have now paddled 3 sections of the Wolf river encompassing 19 miles and still many more sections to go!  For a detailed description of the Bateman to Moscow section, go to this link and on the right hand side, select Bateman to Moscow.
